Screw Buying Flowers, I’m Gonna Grow Some

Posted on Apr 28 2010 - 3:47am by Mike Lieberman

Now that I have the balcony garden set up and am gonna be starting the vegetable seeds, I needed a new project.

Since my new roommate, Anita, likes flowers, I decided to get her flowers. I bought seeds from Botanical Interests to start growing flowers instead of buying them.

After reading an article in Green Lifestyle Magazine about the flower industry and how most flowers imported into the United States come to us via the exploitation of women workers, I started to see flowers in a whole new light. This was an industry that I didn’t want to support.

Anita likes flowers. I like Anita. So this is a way for me to be able to supply her with the flowers that she wants and not have a guilty conscience about it. Plus there’s plenty of room on the balcony garden for them.

I have seed packets for Aster, Calendula (an edible), Cosmos, Snapdragon, Sunflower (seeds maybe?) and Zinnia.

Yea, so now I’m gonna be growing flowers too.

Heck yah! Best way to get the best looking plants too. Love the snapdragon. It still freaks me out when Megan gets the flower to talk. Matti

Grow some carnations, too, Mike! They last 3 weeks in a vase!

    What these flowers talk?

nice variety. You should try nasturtiums too, the leaves and flowers are edible. Also lots of flowers are supposed to be good companion plants like alyssum.

I have lots to start. Need to make some more containers for everything first.

    Nice. Any specific kind?

Hey, any updates on the changes you're making to the container design?

I have updated them, but need to make one last revision of drilling holes into the bottom of the planting container to allow the soil to breathe a bit more https://www.urbanorganicgardener.com/self-wateri

I'll get a post up as to why I changed em up. Good call on that one.

Truthfully, I think they are all wonderful and smell amazing! Red, white, pink, fringed – I've never gone wrong with carnations! 🙂

Once I get these in, I'll look into the carnations. Thanks.

You picked flowers that should be easy to grow. I love snapdragons, they are a beautiful plant to watch grow! Have you got these beauties planted yet?

    Thanks Tara. Not yet.
