Backyard Vegetable Gardening

Standing in my backyard vegetable garden in Brooklyn. August 23, 2009.

In my grandmother’s Brooklyn backyard I have my vegetable garden set up in self watering containers that I built out of recycled materials. There are 16 containers and 5 herb planters.

The vegetables I currently have planted are

  • Arugula
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Collard greens
  • Cucumber
  • Dandelion
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Radicchio
  • Spinach
  • Sorrel
  • Stinging nettles
  • Swiss chard
  • The herbs are

  • Cinnamon basil
  • Chocolate mint
  • Nasturtium (an edible flower)
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Spearmint
  • Thyme
  • Zataar

      I plan on putting aged horse manure and compost into it.
