Backyard Vegetable Gardening

Standing in my backyard vegetable garden in Brooklyn. August 23, 2009.

In my grandmother’s Brooklyn backyard I have my vegetable garden set up in self watering containers that I built out of recycled materials. There are 16 containers and 5 herb planters.

The vegetables I currently have planted are

Arugula

Dandelion

Sorrel

The herbs are

Cinnamon basil

Chocolate mint

Nasturtium (an edible flower)

Oregano

Parsley

Rosemary

Sage

Spearmint

Thyme

Zataar

What if my backyard soil is not fertile....not even grass grow on it! does compost help ensure perfect growth of watever I'm going to plant there? Btw...cool site I've been looking for this kind of site for a long time...

I plan on putting aged horse manure and compost into it.
