Having an emergency seed bank is important because a big part of self-sufficiency is being able to grow your own food.

  • Chris

I would really love to have a selection of seeds to choose should everything go awry. THis would be awesome to have. Thanks for the good work Mike. Keep it up!

  • Michaela Schade

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I want to be able to feed my family only the best for if ever/whenever the government tries to cut off the supply of organic heirloom seeds.

  • Barborkajen

Having an emergency seed bank would be a smart idea so that you can have purity of product and also in case something goes wrong, be it government fail, loss of job, or whatever, you still have the ability to at least grow your own food.

  • Nora Davenport

Having an emergency seed bank is important because growing our garden from seed is the only way we can afford to make pickles. It’s also nicer to pick dinner from the garden than from the supermarket.

  • Makini Osson

Having an emergency seed bank is important because these days even organic produce is GMO, and we should always be prepared to take matters into our own hands in case the food laws make it more difficult to get fresh, non adulterated food.

  • Christimeyer

Having an emergency seed bank is important because without self-perpetuating seeds, our food supply is doomed.

  • Phoebe Stein

Having an emergency seed bank is important because accessing fresh, organic foods in New York can sometimes be prohibitively expensive.

  • Pam Howe

Having an emergency seed bank is important because food riots and starving to death can ruin your day.

  • http://twitter.com/culinarybliss Alicia Ambler

Having an emergency seed bank is important because you never know what will germinate and what won’t!

  • Francesca

Having an emergency seed bank is important because at the rate we’re going, with genitive modification of seed varieties, we’ll eventually end up with talking, thinking plants, and no one wants to eat something that can yell back!!

  • Gaby Åhnström

Having an emergency seed bank is important because that woud make me look so more professional than I am….and maybe I’ll learn a thing or two at the same time !

  • Paula

Seeds, seeds good for the heart…the more you plant the fuller your cart. The fuller your cart, the better you feel….so plant more seed all year!

  • Sarah Schneider

Having an emergency seed bank is important because THAT is a legacy right there! The ability to grow untainted food for your family and conserve them for years to come! It is a lifeline!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BOFW4GBUPVQ5HKN3DMBSWJVSGU Heather

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it would ease the worry associated with not being prepared. Also, growing things is fun!

  • Sheila B

Having an emergency seed bank is important because when the zombie apocalypse breaks out, we’ll need the start of a food source when it becomes safe again.
Sorry, Mike, I couldn’t resist. I’ve been following your blog for a couple months now but never posted. Thanks for all the great tips. It’s motivated me to get my garden started this spring. I haven’t had a garden in a number of years.

  • Shelly Bourdo

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we never know what tomorrow will hold. Having access to fresh, healthy vegetables is vitally important in today’s turbulent economy.

  • Buffalomary

Having an emergency seed bank is important because the future is so uncertain right now. Having nutritious food is a basic human need and knowing where my food is coming from and what is in it is very important to me. I want to learn more about saving seed as well as be able to provide the proper food for my family.

  • Susan_S

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we need to be self sustainable. We simply can’t let companies like Monsanto rule our food supply chain. We must take our food seriously and take action to prevent GMOs from becoming the norm.

  • Charisma

Having a emergency seed bank is important because it will help my family and others come together to take care of it and reap the benefits in the time of an emergency and everyday delights. :)

  • Paula

Having an emergency seed bank is important and I often think what would I or anybody would do if grocery stores closed due to economic collapse, or something worse like natural or man-made catastrophe’s. Could you feed your family from your garden if you (HAD) to? What if you simply decided you wanted to?  The emergency survival seed bank is designed to serve that very purpose.

  • Lauren Freda

Having an emergency seed bank is important because if there is any sort of food shortage, seeds will also become difficult to obtain.  Having them ahead of time helps people feed themselves and their families, and to rebuild their community in years to come if that becomes necessary.

Also, if you don’t have a sheltered area and some seeds a few years into the Zombie Apocalypse, you’re in big trouble.

  • FloridaSalon

I hope I finally found the right place to enter your contest : )

  • maureenC

Having an emergency seed bank is important because being self sufficient and having access to healthy vegetables is
vitally important in today’s economic uncertainty

  • Kahoelzl

Having an emergency seed bank is important for protecting various plant species. In the event that we screw up the world enough to lose a crop, emergency seeds can be used to reintroduce a different variety. Also, the threat of a zombie apocalypse worries me some.

  • Lifeissparkly

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because it will provide a source of sustenance for my family and neighbors should an emergency occur. And it will help speak against the companies supporting GMOs.”

  • seedwhisperer

My family is dependent on the food I grow. There would be NO fresh produce in the house.

  • Tracygoes

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because non GMO seeds need to exist and keep on existing.  No more modifications of nature, please!  Plus knowing how to plant, grow and harvest our own food is a necessary skill”

  • Pat Boardman

Having an emergency seed bank is important because being able to provide for our families may become difficult if we do not learn to be self sufficient.

  • Chickenbonewatt

Having an emergency seed bank is important becuase in a flailing economic landscape, you never know how self-reliant you may have to be to survive. Also, having organic, non-GMO at your disposal gives you the edge on maintaining your health in the face of an ever increasing assault of our national diet.

  • Jfoster

Having an emergency seed bank is important because agriculture is the backbone of society as we know it.  We must be prepared in the even of cataclysmic natural events to rebuild our society.  That rebirth must start with agriculture.

  • http://twitter.com/MissJoysOrnamen Miss Joy’s Ornaments

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because we can no longer trust our food supply in this country. Self-reliance is one of the last options offered to us.

  • Laurel Rose

Having an emergency seed bank is important because natural disasters and food shortages are a reality that can happen when we least expect it!

  • Tiggrang

We can already see what toll human life is taking on the planet, so what better way to be prepared and also to nurture Nature as it was originally intended than by having a seed bank and growing plants from heirloom and non-GMO seed!

  • Laurel Rose

Love that new spin on the “beans beans”!

  • http://twitter.com/mooifood stephen hauptfuhr

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it’s much like having a savings account, in the same way that you put money into a bank for future needs, seeds are put into a bank in case of natural disasters or other unknown emergencies..

  • Jennifer

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I want to be self sufficient and grow as much of my own food as I can for me and my family no matter what is going on in the world around me!

  • Logan5

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it gives you independence from unsustainable food sources, and empowers you and your community with the tools necessary to plant the seeds necessary to keep its people alive, and help them thrive :o ) The more people who do this in a community, the more power it has for sustainability, and decreasing dependence on polluting fuel sources as well.

  • Tiffany

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it means that you will be able to feed yourself and your family, for the long term, in the case of a situation that destroys your current routes to foods. It gives piece of mind in the mean time and could mean the difference between life or death in the future.

  • Brandon Hurd

I would want to have an emergency or reserve seed bank so that I could have the ability to feed and produce my own resources if current communities are disbanded in time of crises. It would be the absolute most important survival tool to have in a long term crisis situation. Most people do not realize how important the ability to produce food is in these types of situations.

  • Jennifer

I’m leaning to grow a garden! Myself and my neighbor are starting a little neighbor veggie/fruit co-op, we plan to grow different veggies/fruits to share and live off the entire year and this would go a long way to making that happen.

  • http://twitter.com/TheFoodRebels Food Rebels

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we must take control of our own future and be prepared for whatever may come along.

  • Peggyjeanrobinson

It is vital to have an emergency seed bank for so many reasons… to be able to go anywhere there is a viable growing medium and plant a garden for food… with non-hybrid seeds that will insure seed saving abilities season after season.  If you are smart about it this  bank of 58,000 seeds, will allow you and your neighbors to live off of your veggie garden for years.  Now that I have lived in Southern CA for 8 years, with the promise of earthquakes, I take preparedness very seriously.  Hopefully I can add this seed kit to my first aid kit and my disaster preparedness regime.  Thanks.

  • Garrett S. Miller

Having an emergency seed bank is important because when you watch how people behave for Black Friday sales, you can imagine how horrible they will be when food is scarce. No riots in my backyard!

  • Yolandasotolopez

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because we need to be able to preserve life. What is more important than having seeds to be able to grow our own food. Especially open pollinated seeds, non-gmo seeds. I hope I win. I have been looking about this product even before your contest.

  • Ashley

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it allows us to get closer to the earth. It’s vital to be self sustainable, and a mega seed bank is the way to do that!

  • Ashley

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it allows us to get closer to the earth. It’s vital to be self sustainable, and a mega seed bank is the way to do that!

  • Anonymous

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because, as plant stewards it is our responsibility.”

  • Bobby Groves

Having an emergency seed bank is important because maintaining biodiversity of our crops makes our communities more resilient to outside stress.  Not only does a more diverse selection of crops enhance food security, it also makes the world of food more vibrant, unpredictable, and enhances the beauty of gardens, farms, and our dinner tables.

  • Antonina Whaples

Having a an emergency seed bank is important so that every generation can come to know true sustainability and health

  • Scotchgrrl

Having an emergency seed bank is important because Monsanto is extincting varieties of seeds through genetic modification. Someone has to protect variety. And that someone would be the rest of us.

  • Gail

Having an emergency Seed Bank is important because of the ever increasing GMO’s that are threatening our very existence.  We need to take responsibility for our own survival and try to make sure we can feed ourselves with non GMO food.

  • FreeInSpirit

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it’s the only way to ensure that you have the seeds you want when it’s your season to plant.
I learned years ago that the National Chain Stores don’t carry seeds during MY planting season.

  • Mamasimpson

It’s a good way to maintain a sustainable food supply.

  • Allie M.

Having an emergency seed bank ensures the genetic integrity of our produce and grains.  More and more scientific evidence is showing that GMOs may allow a crop to proliferate, it does so at a toll to the land, the environment and our health.  With many variations of food seeds becoming extinct every year, it is our duty to protect our crops for future generations to be able to know and understand what REAL food tastes like.

  • http://profiles.google.com/cennisc C Ennis

Having an emergency seed bank is important because the supermarket may not always be available.  Also, it is important to remember that the food you get from the supermarket now is engineered for quantity, which is not necessarily equal to quality.  Growing your own food and saving seeds is an important step in maintaining the diversity that we are in danger of losing to industrialized agriculture’s aggressive pursuit of profits.

  • http://twitter.com/jchapstk Jeavonna

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because you never know if the grant funding will come through during the growing season instead of at the beginning..”

  • Evan Hickey

Id like to know if something did happen in the world like a natural disaster, or population rapid expansion i wouldnt have to depend on some evil corporation like monsanto as my only way of eating, I would have my own back up!

  • steph

Because when the government has ruined our food supply the entire population is going to have to depend on the sustainable seeds that we’ve saved.

  • Crystal

Because on the day the earth stands still, or when zombies walk the earth, or when the aliens att… well you get it, and there’s no more food in the supermarket, we’ll have food growing in our backyards (as everybody should have!) =:3

  • Chris Corbett

Because as a father of 5, I see the potential for the possibility of the supermarket failing in some way being detrimental to survival. We are also homeschoolers, and see the potential and value in using the garden to show and be first hand teacher of all my children, how to manage time, the land, and providential science of plants and growth!

  • Vicki

It’s more and more important to become self sufficient for many reasons. Economy, to avoid chemicals, health, spiritual well being….

  • Kristin Overton

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I wont be able to outrun the zombies… December 2012, right? I’d better plant this spring if I have any hope…

  • Meemsnyc

You never know when you run out.

  • Sasha

Food was not intended for profit, it was intended for sustainability. Nature did not anticipate the altering and mass production of food for capital gain. Food was designed to provide nourishment for all things living. For us to walk into a supermarket and grab boxes and bags of packaged foods from the shelf is unnatural. This current state of living is causing extensive damage to soil as well as air and water pollution. In case something should happen to life and existence as we know it, having a seed bank would be very important to “help” maintain and secure life on planet earth….or another planet in case we somehow made our way out into the “great unknown”….but who am I kidding…that would only be reserved for the 1%…..

  • Ronnie

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because If we went into a  Great Depression or you lost your job you could help feed yourself and others as well also could earn money from this as well.

  • Christopher Fillmore

Having an emergency seed bank is important because more and more the world’s supply of foods have become genetically modified, and it will be useful to those who don’t have the ability to acquire the non-modified foods. When there are people around to share seeds and plants it will be possible to spread all natural foods to each other and detach ourselves from the teat  of the Monsanto-esque corporations who make their billions selling seeds of vegetables stripped of nutrients and pumped full of chemicals.

  • Specialkayefl

Because of the garbage available in most stores and all the processed crap making Americans the fattest nation worldwide.

  • Heath Cole

Having an emergency seed bank is important because you need to be able to feed your own family (and possibly your community) from your own independent garden if the need arises.  With the uncertainty of our economy and the eminent depletion of oil, you never know when you might have to (or just want to) feed yourself.  Thanks for the chance to win, Mike!  :D

  • Nathan

Having an emergency seed bank is important because the current food industry is rather flawed and corrupt.  Not only is a large portion of food genetically-modified, slavery is often used in the, “production” of produce.  I believe that is important for individuals to be able to choose between supporting a corrupt system or sustaining himself in a positive way.

  • Jay Murray

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it insures the continuation of a great natural resource that can be replenished if administered properly. This will be vital as the world itself moves towards greater population numbers and the “seen need” to get more out of the current food production techniques. And it also will see that no “product” as it were would extinct.

  • Kris

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it provides the opportunity to be able to support ourselves & our communities by sharing fresh, locally grown, organic produce. Growing & eating locally reduces the need for long distance trucking/transportation of food which in turn reduces our carbon footprint on the planet. Growing your own food connects you with the Earth. By learning what the soil needs to grow your fruits & vegetables you begin to learn what the Earth needs to balance our delicate ecosystems. It also provides a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors & create a community spirit of shared support.

  • Miriam

Having an emergency seed bank is important because crops can fail, imported food may not always be so cheap and easy to come by, and seeds are more valuable than gold–they produce food that keeps us alive and healthy. It’s also CRUCIAL that we maintain supplies of non-hybrid, non-GMO seeds. Monsanto and other chemical companies masquerading as seed companies are working around the clock to wipe out heirloom varieties whose seeds can be saved and planted again the next year, so that they can make the world dependent on their monstrous sterile and/or genetically contaminated seeds. In this situation, having an emergency seed bank is important because it is a revolutionary act that puts US in control of our own gardens, plates, and lives.

  • Jezibels

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because ___I will have the tools I need to teach the wee ones all about planting seeds that grow into nutritious food, then once the food has grown and the plant has produced you can then save the seed to grow next season_______ Priceless!

  • Andrew

i love no gmo seeds i hope i win!!

  • Lizapiper

I will be able to plant and eat my own food whenever I need or want to!

  • Alexxus Moreno

Having a emergency seed bank is important because it can prepare us for the future in case of something were to ever happen, it would allow us to help each other in the community. In teaching and  growing our own food and being able to maintain sustainability from year to year , Also helping out people who are in need of food who can not afford it with it being either some seeds to help and teach them how to grow,or sharing our produce that we grow to others. Another reason is so we know what we eat and maintain healthy without any chemicals ,Teaching our children that food doesnt just come from the grocery store and that theres more than just eating fast food. Also just for ourselfs to just stay healthier and active in the garden as i think we should all have one no matter how much space you have , even by having just one plant would make all the difference … Well as there is no one reason why a emergency seed bank is important it is neccesary for all of us to have one .And to Maintain A Bountiful Harvest …Happy Gardening

  • http://twitter.com/HomeGrownFun Cindy Rajhel

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it is like comfort food that hasn’t been grown yet.

  • http://skymindedandevergrowing.blogspot.com/ Trinityvision3

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it ensures that i will be able to provide for myself and my family, no matter what happens.

  • Tonya

Because I don’t have enough space to plant much at once and a seed bank helps with that and also allows me to plan out my garden based on when things should be planted in my area.

  • AlaskanGrownRevolution

….when SHTF my family and our little neighborhood won’t starve to death.
    :o ) ~ Alaskan Grown Revolution

  • Meg_maureen

Having an emergency seed bank is important because seeds may serve as currency after the zombie apocalypse.

  • andrea donato

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we need to preserve a piece of agricultural and horticultural heritage for the day that enough citizens understand the corruption that is Monsanto.  We need the seed banks to allow us to start over with security and faith that is inside each of those seeds.

  • Tris

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I need help to feed my family and I’m willing to put in the extra work to achieve that goal.  Thanks, Mike, for the opportunity and welcome back.  I really missed you!

  • Annie_Maine

Having an emergency seed bank is important because you never know when something will happen and you will have to either provide your own food for a period of time or supplement what you can afford at the grocery store.  You want to know your seeds will actually grow and that you know how to grow healthy food.

  • Jenn

Having an emergency sees bank is important because a day will come when we’ll be forced to provide for ourselves and so many people won’t be prepared.

  • http://twitter.com/yesquer yolanda esquer

Having an emergency seed bank is CRUCIAL, in today’s crazy world…from nuclear meltdowns, to crazy civil wars, we just never know what is going to get thrown in our lap.  Seeds are more valuable than any $$ accounts we may have.

  • Frank Cetera

…Many communities such as ours need to start a local seed bank that is open to more than just an individual family in anticipation of transition, but they unfortunately are not often aware enough to take the initiative or to follow the initiative of another neighbor.  Receiving the Mega SeedBank would be a boon to helping start such a project in our neighborhood because (besides contributing the initial deposit) it would be a good marketable story to engage folks and create momentum for building a seed bank further.  frcetera@alchemicalnursery.org

  • Tayluca

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because you never know when you will have a bad crop and be unable to use seeds from it. Also, because seeds are the building blocks of life. If you have seeds and a little bit of time to tend them, you have the potential to start again.”

  • DeerEyes45

A emergency seed bank is very important to have with all of the things that we face in 2012 from weather to any disasters,,  with a seed bank you could help others and with the seeds being 100% heirloom it would just keep on giving every year,, what a wonderful contest

  • http://organicandsustainable.org/ Shawn73

because..you know you’re growing your own healthy food, you’re saving $ and you’re not spending BIG $ @ the grocery store not knowing where your food came from!

  • Miki Wright

Having an emergency seed bank is important as a protection against corporate owned seed companies like Monsanto. I choose not to eat GMO and foresee a time when that might be all the seeds available to plant unless there are heirlooms stored safely in a bank.

  • Donnie Thompson

Having an emergency seed bank is important because of the global climate changes, wars etc lots of things can happen to the food supply and if you have your own heirloom seeds you can provide food to your family and save seeds for your children and family. I would use the seeds I wanted and give the rest away to people who would grow and enjoy them.

  • Steve Harpster

Great product that everyone must have.

  • Jonathan S

Having an emergency seed bank is important because in the event that one must grow their own food one must have the necessary resources to do so.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XT4DIWF2JBWZ2LNBIEQEQI42RQ Kevin

Its important to take as much away from Monsanto humanly possible

  • http://twitter.com/CrystalNC Crystal Clapp

I have a small seed saving program but hope to build upon this so during trying times I can share and teach others the importance of growing your own food.

  • http://twitter.com/CrystalNC Crystal Clapp

The importance of growing your own food is you control the environment that your vegetables are grown in (organic) etc.

  • Megan

To me it is important go grow alot of my own food because I feel better feeding home grown veggies to my kids, I know what went into it and its always important to show the kids where food comes from, I also teach them how to plant and take care of their plants.  The final product always makes them happy and proud to eat the fruites of there labor

  • http://www.UrbanFarmAndBeehives.com/ Mil

Is it important because if during a major disaster there is no food, having these emergency seeds might make the difference between life and death.

  • Heidy Blalack

Hey there I finally decided to check out your website cuz of this contest but also cuz I wanted some info on starting up my garden on the balcony of my new place.  You got some really good things on the site and now it is finally bookmarked.  Thanks again.

  • Lisa

Having an emergency seed bank is important to me because I would know where the food came from and that it was safe especially in case of an emergency where other sources might be contaminated.  Also because I would know the growing process and that it would be done organically, chemically free, non-GMO and free of Monsanto’s interference. I would know that it is safe for me and my family because I grew it.

  • Rebecca Keller

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we understand so little of what miracles await inside the DNA of plants and yet we continue to destroy the environment that allows them to survive & thrive as well as that very DNA through bioengineering. By propagating heirloom plants, we give the future a better chance of finding the cures for diseases and the secrets to longevity by having access to unaltered plant DNA that developed naturally.

  • OG Craig

    2 quick reasons:
    1. preserve seed varieties for future i.e. in a world wide disaster
    2. have a potential food source while the grocery stores are closed!

  • Paula

Having emergency seeds is just smart.  Even if you have emergency food storage some day that will run out.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thecasualgardener Shawna Coronado

Having an emergency seed bank is important because in a down economy people are starving. Self-sufficient backyard gardening and organic living is the way to live in order to educate our children – our future humanity – on how to take care of themselves. Starving is not an option. Growing is life.

I hope I win. I’d like to see the seed kit and how it all works. :-)

    Happy Gardening!

Emergency seed banks will be more valuable than Gold in a catastrophe!  Hoarding gold and silver will be wothless if you starve to death!  Many folks need to step back and re-think priorities!  What is important in Life, having all the riches and fancy toys, or having life itself?

  • Prdobbs

Having an emergency food bank is important because it will continue to feed your family and community for years. Emergency preparedness is about more than short term management, it is about being able to survive and thrive in the long term. Emergency food and medicine stores will eventually run out but having the knowledge as ability to truly live off of the land will last lifetimes.

  • Islanddebi1

Having an emergency seed bank is important so that we can continue to feed future generations the wonderful, nutritious, fruits and vegetables that us and our forefathers have enjoyed for centuries.

  • Anonymous

Having an emergency seed bank is important to not only feed ourselves but to support biodiversity.

  • Zonahead

Having an emergency seed bank is important because you can be prepared to plant safe and nutritious food for your family.

  • Lindakbedell

Having an emergency food bank is important because the world needs me.

  • Dirt Boss

Having an emergency seed bank is important because you are ultimately the one who’s responsible for your family’s needs in the case of an emergency; not the government or the grocery store.

  • Kathy =B-)

… … Because you have life in a bag, waiting to pop out and share its bounty if you let it have a bit of dirt, water and sunlight.  Now that is amazing.

  • Rachelle DeMunck

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I am committed to being as self-sufficient as possible in regards to my food.  With the power of corporations, the world has been losing diversity in seeds.  Relying on only one variety to supply our food needs is inviting disaster.  I want to control how my food is raised, and have a choice in what I eat.

  • Jane Brody

Having an emergency seed bank is important because food is life…

  • Martin I

…even though money is super tight, I WANT to eat right & take care of my health, especially since I was diagnosed with Bordeline Personality. It was a HUGE blow and it took a toll on my overall health. This would be a tremendous help for me…

  • Madamegooseberry

Having an emergency seed bank is important because being self-sufficient in a grocery-store-dependence era is important to me.  Being able to feed my family, even family who live on their own, pure food instead of monster food is very important to me.  I have always told my children there will come a day when they will need to know how to grow their *own* food just to survive.

  • jennifer

having seed is empowering one’s self reliance as well as health.  Growing ones own food should be a basic is very much lost in todays main stream world.  How theraputic it woud be for people to grow their own food and the community it brings to a family, neighborhood, city and country.  We all have to rely on food so lets do our part.  I would love to win the seed for me and my daughters!

  • Calasmy4

Having an emergency seed bank is important because  we need to start depending on our own abilities and strength to take care of ourselves.  We have the responsibility to our family and community to be able to contribute in a meaningful way.  Raising vegetables and saving seeds is a real way to better lives both today and in the unknown future.

  • Michelle K

…because it is all about surviving in the healthiest way.  By growing your own food one can do so much more than just take care of the family.  We can contribute to the Earth and our community.

  • Castle27

Having an emergency seed bank is important because its bounty will sustain you and your family, improve your health, obviate the need to depend on other outside sources for the same produce you plant.  It all adds up to the peace of mind you will have knowing that you have this emergency stash available.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because not only can I grow my own vegetables, but I know that I am serving 100% non- hybrid, non-gmo and organic food to myself and my family.  What better way to nourish your body and your soul?!

…because preservation of our food supply is paramount to survival, but also because it creates a truly local version of favorite plants, saves money, and provides us with the freshest possible (and thus most viable) seeds.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it’s a great form of HEALTH INSURANCE!  And then we will truly know where our food is coming from.  Health insurance for our bodies, our community and our earth.  Very little travel time from garden to mouth–so less loss of nutrients.  Thanks for the contest!!!  :)

Having an emergency seed bank is important because growing food is a way to ensure it is safe and healthy. Having an emergency seed bank is important bacause without healthy food we die. I pray that if the time came that I would also have the knowlege to be able to purify water if I had access to any to grow the seeds. Or that I still had my home with grow lights, soil and electricity to grow them inside if it is winter. And that the others around me would work together to make it happen so we all didn’t starve to death. I’m so glad that there are still people out there that believe in doing things the way our Creator intended it to be. That haven’t messed up His work for their gain or their ignorance that they can do it better. Thank you for caring enough to keep seeds pure and teaching others the importance of doing so. Thank you for the oportunity to win such a wonderful gift.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it’s a good thing to think about a plan C in case plan B fails. Oh and also because we are in … 2012.

  • Laura Jean

Having an emergency seed bank is important because the future of our economy is so uncertain. If it gets so bad that people are scrounging for food, or relying on the government for handouts, having a seed bank will prevent me and my neighbors from having to eat unhealthy, gmo, processed food. It will also ensure that there will be good seeds growing in our neighborhood. With Monsanto taking over natures genetic plan and replacing it with their own frakenfood, having good non-gmo seeds growing in my backyard or in a greenhouse would insure that the natural varieties of food will persist and be spread to more and more people as the years progress. It’s important to save these seeds and keep them going, and very important to be able to rely on yourself for the food you need in case something terrible happens in our country.

  • Anonymous

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it is better to be prepared than not. When the food stream becomes contaminated due to a man-made or natural-made disaster, you can be assured that you are prepared to nourish your family. Plant-based diets rule!

  • Anonymous

Having an emergency seed bank is very important for a few reasons.

    1)  We are quite possibly on the verge of a global economic collapse.  There will be no more oil to fuel the ships and trucks to bring us food; everything will need to be grown locally.  Which means there will be no more grocery stores and we will have to grow our own food.

    2)  If the economy collapses and we will have no currancy, the seeds will be considered a very valuable source for trade.

    3)  If a natural catastrophic event occurs (which by the way things are going, it is highly likely) we will not have access to food and will need to grow our own.

  • Framegirl4u

Keeping the seed bank for an emergency is important because you just NEVER KNOW. Maybe you’ll never need it, but maybe you will.
If you use the seed bank right away, it’s important because you know that your seeds are “natural” and organic – you know exactly what they are.

  • Pal

Nutritional foods are becoming more scarce all of the time and will continue to do so as time goes on. My goal is to plant several acres of fruit, berries, vegetables, and greens to share with many of those in need and to teach them how to raise healthy gardens of their own. It will require many healthy seeds to begin this and see it through. However I am excited to begin  and to share whatever knowledge and seeds I can gather.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because when there is no food, nothing else matters.  Having food available for my small children to eat is crucial.  Being prepared is vital.   I’m also excited to be able to save heirloom varieties of foods that we just don’t want to lose.   It means having a solution before there’s a problem and then ensuring that there isn’t going to be a problem for us and hopefully many other families we can help feed along the way.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I don’t trust the conglomerates. They are so concerned with making it low cost, bigger, and last nearly forever.  The problem is that its bigger, not better and no flavor.  I miss the real flavors and aromas of vegetables and herbs. My interest lies in hydroponics. In this day and age, it is necessary to get back to our grass roots. It is essential for our survival. We as a culture take everything for granted.

  • Shari

Having an emergency seed bank is important because those seeds and soil are crucial to building community where there might not be any. Should we reach a point where our natural resources are exhausted or for whatever reason our grid collapses, providing work, food, and a place to gather and exchange information and affection for each other makes all the difference, quite literally. The garden becomes the new community center, replacing the mall or, G-d-forbid, the Wal-Mart. :) Happy new year!

  • Joz

Having an emergency seed bank is important because grocery stores and restaurants *aren’t* the origin of all foodstuffs.  We’ve (as a people, not as individuals) forgotten this.  If it all goes to smash, at least a few of us will need to know how to grow things to eat, and be able to grow things *reliably* for more than a single season/generation.

  • Srb1350

We really don’t know what the future has in store. How valuable would these seeds be to any of us to have at such a time if there were none available due to unforseen catastrophy. What a great idea to have these kits available.

  • Rooster

Being on fixed income my grocery list is shrinking every week with the money budgeted for food. As it is, I only eat two meals a day to keep from running out of food before payday. To have an emergency seed bank would give piece of mind to know I can supplement my diet with healthy non genetically altered food for myself and my neighbors with children who are in the same boat as myself and have a food source in case there is no more available.

  • kelliinkc

Because you will be able to feed your family, and most likely neighbors, high quality food. Having this onhand will enable you to devote resources–money–to other needs.

  • Syreeta Jayne

The person who fails to plan, plans to fail. the way we see things going, with Monsanto trying to control all seeds, it’s important to have emergency supplies of everything. In this case, I love your post because it hadn’t occured to me to store seeds as well!

  • Michelle

Thank you for this gift of life! Having an emergency seed bank is important because we cannot depend on the government or the “system” for our food in the current UNSUSTAINABLE food system. Each should become self sustaining individuals and communities. I hope to teach my family, church, and neighbors how to do just that, starting in my own small garden!

  • Germaine Jenkins

despite what we think, it isn’t support from government and non profit agencies that counts after a disaster. Check out an NPR report from last June: The Key to Disaster Survival? Friends and Neighbors. What’s been proven is those areas that bounce back the best after a disaster do so because closely connected neighbors help each other recover. Growing food now as a community is an informal way to get to know your neighbors and their needs. Get that community and/or backyard garden growing today and build up your seed stores that will help you all pull through when and if the worst happens. Even if it doesn’t, you’ll be blessed because you’ll get back to what’s most important in our lives. Not money or material things but relationships. Peace!

in addition to my earlier reply…if there were to be a disaster wiping out great portions of land, then people who have a seed bank will able to carry on the lineage of seeds.

  • Geoff McNeely

Having an emergency seed bank is important because 12,000 years ago the ice caps melted and the seas rose by over 100m, flooding nearly every (then) aerable land on the planet. It was emergency seed banks that allowed the ancients to restore civilization by reintroducing agriculture in the Andes, SE Asia and the Fertile Crescent. Seed banks saved humanity from utter destruction back then and when the next global catastrophe hits, be it climate change or overpopulation, those with the emergency seed banks will be the leaders others look to for guidance and hope.

  • ontheland

Having an emergency seed bank is important because individuals and small groups need to do what they can to be prepared for survival in the event of natural disaster.  A seed bank of heirloom, non-hybrid, GMO seeds ensures that quality produce can be grown locally.  Local and community gardening reduces our carbon footprint and makes quality food affordable as food prices rise.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because there could, at any moment, arise the situation where this is absolutely necessary; and to have a seed bank of this quality is crucial as the heirlooms can be harvested for continued propagation in the future. thanks for offering this.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because  with GMOs dominating the market, even the foods that we rely on are unsafe! And even if GMOs were to be wiped out, it helps to provide food for your family and/or neighbors in the event of an emergency where our food supply is cut off.

  • Marje Kimberly

This priceless seed bank would emphasize that there is only one person in the world responsible for my health!  That responsibiity lies with ME, myself and I!  Regardless of whatever happens in our unreliable world, staying next to God’s living foods just as He planned for us, is perhaps one of the most positive ways to stay emotionally, spiritually and mentally sound!  Wow!  What a beautiful “gift of life” this collection of heirloom seeds would be!”

If we were born with an instruction manual showing how we should retain ultimate health for life, these precious seeds would be the #1 requirement to start us off in the right direction!  The 2nd commandment would be, “Thou shall not compromise or modify My seeds in any way, or you will discourage the wonderful pain-free life I have designed for you!”

Having an emergency seed bank is important because big companies are trying to kill off all non-GMO seeds for their benefit. I think we can all agree that’s a BAD idea, particularly with the uncertainty of our current times. Heirloom seeds are the only ones that reproduce, and the only sure way of keeping ourselves fed long term. Of course, we also need to know what to do with these seeds! ;)

  • Sueko

Having an emergency seed bank is important because one cannot trust that commercially available seeds are not altered chemically or genetically, and therefore the safest food supply is to grow your own.

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because _________.”  Lagre multi national companys like Monsanto own patients to seeds.   They are posioning the food supply with their GMO products.  I was under the impression that the FDA was there to protect me from such horrific actions by big corporations.  I watched a film called “Food Inc” and it really shocked me how you really can’t tell were Monsanto starts and the FDA ends, it seems like if you help them (Monsanto)  you have a job for life.  They steal crops from farmers wait a year or so after the crops are harvested and then go after the farmer for divindends on their patients, (once the crops are gone the farmer has no way to test them to see if GMO seeds were used).  They get money for every crop produced with GMO seeds.  When  Gmo crops cross pollinate with non GMO seeds they are now making mutant plant/crops (as if GMO crops wernt mutant enough) and where this vicious cycle ends, who knows.  I dont want my survival and my famlies survival dependant on the corporations who have a bad track record for the consumer that they say they serve.  If they own the patients, sooner or later they will own the food.  If they own both the patients and the food then I am at their mercy, I choose to change that, now, while I still have a choice.  Thank you for reading!!!!

  • Jmail

Regardless of what happens in 2012, or beyond. Having an emergency seed bank is important because we need seeds of plants that can reproduce and are not genetically modified. These pure seeds are the key to bringing the earths food supply back from a crisis and providing freedom from the bonds that are the food industry.

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because ultimately it is MY responsibility to make sure that I feed my family and myself whole, healthy  foods and not just what big manufacturers or even government wants me to buy.  If I grow my own, I know it’s good and good for us.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it will not only help prevent greedy conglomerates, like Monsanto, ADM, Dow, Syngenta, Bayer, or DuPont, from cornering the food market, but also aid in securing a bio-diverse, GMO-free, and organic continued existence.

Thank you for this opportunity and for the work you do educating and setting such an inspiring example. Your urban garden is not very different than my rooftop garden. Though I wish I had the space for a conventional “ground floor” garden, at least I don’t have to deal with slugs, nor ants, but can still enjoy a plethora of winged beneficial insects (including honey-bees and bumble-bees), while I enjoy my terrace-atop-of-the-world.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it allows you to grow your own food! In the event of not being able to purchase foods from local farms, stands and other sources, you will have the option of growing your own which ultimately ensures your and your family’s survival.

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because when the SHTF it will be too late!”

  • Jennifer

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it creates a multi-generational link for agriculture. As many seed varieties become scarce due to new production methods, this can provide a link to the past and the ability to resurrect it when necessary.

  • Patricia Forsythe

Having an emergency seed bank is important because with the state of the world as it is, with the precarious state of our economy and with the rising cost of energy, it is in our best interest to be able to grow our own food from seeds that are true to their past, and not a genetically altered seed that will not produce a viable harvest of new plants.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because you never know when you might need it.  Better safe than sorry!  Besides, I think using the high quality non-GMO seeds now to start a vegetable garden is a wonderful idea!

Having an emergency seed bank is important as relying on a government which refuses to acknowledge how fragile our food supply system is, is foolish.

  • Stephanie Kristen

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it allows individuals to be self sufficient. It is important to be able to take care of yourself in both crisis and when life is “normal”. We know exactly what we are eating and can nourish our bodies and the earth.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because as contamination through cross-pollination with GMO plants becomes more and more common, having a dependable supply of heirloom seeds will be worth more than gold in the food crisis that will indubitably result. However, just having the seeds is not enough– you also have to know how to successfully start them, care for them, harvest the bounty and save the seeds for generations to come– not to mention preserve the produce, for those of us who live in colder climates. In this day and age, we’ve lost our self-sufficiency– it’s time to take it back!

Having a seed bank (emergency or not) is important since there are more and more times when seeds are being fouled up, the way to bring your garden back to what it should be is to having the forethought to save them while you can!    Luckily for someone out there they will be getting this super sweet deal!!!!!

Having an emergency seed bank (of edible foods!) is important because seeds are all that stand between us and certain starvation.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we all know the stories throughout history of civil strife within nations when not only currently edible food is depleted, but also the seed stocked up against future disaster.

  • JenJennJennn

Having an emergency seed bank is important because I want to survive if anything should happen that interrupts food supply.

  • Cephas6625

Having an emergency seed bank is important because of the continued social and political instability in many lands that stress our fragile agricultural system where nations are more concerned with stocking their arsenals than with filling empty stomachs.

my girlfriend and i plan on moving to canada to (fill in the blank). this seed bank would give us a chance to get started before we move to another country (which will be costly). we NEED this seed bank to get started on learning grow techniques. this seed bank represents a new beginning, for anyone who wins it. i know it’s suppose to be for an emergency but i wanna grow these veggies and plants to donate to local gardens and make food to give to the homeless.

this emergency seed bank is important because it will teach us the importance of accepting responsibility for what we put in our bodies. it will also give us a sense of pride in the agricultural community here in the united states as well as canada.

we are at a critical state in farming and gardening. one day it may be illegal to grow, buy, or sell certain plants and veggies. these seeds will ensure that the government can’t take away our god given right to enjoy the fruits of mother earth.

if i don’t win, i pray it goes someone who really needs it.

    cheers.

Love your page! Very informative and innovative. Would be so happy to win. Your techniques and how to’s make even a novice like me have a can do spirit. Thanks!

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we need as many people keeping a healthy supply of seeds as possible.

Having an emergency seed bank is important so I can share with family and community.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because we don’t know what the future will bring between climate change, genetic modifications gone awry and corporations like Monsanto making it illegal for farmers to save their seeds.  I want to ensure that my family and friends can have pure, nutritious food to sustain them.

  • cookiehiggi

Having an emergency seed bank is important because no knows what the fututre holds when it comes to having an ample supply of beautiful, organic, non-GMO produce. Having a supply of seeds helps guarantees we won’t have to go without the food that truely fuels our bodies.

  • Deester_1

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because it’s important to be self sufficient in times of crisis and not put additional strain on a system trying to help those in real need. And maybe being able to have a productive emergency garden, surplus could be shared.

  • Nancy

Having an emergency seed bank is very important as it will let me grow food for my family if I can’t get seeds from my usual sources during an emergency situation.  I love to grow all kinds of plants and this will help so much.

“Having an emergency seed bank is important because it’s a joyful way to know that I am contributing to sustainability in a TANGIBLE way. Who knows where this world is heading? I do know one thing though: That governments and industry care more about money than how we can care for and nurture each other and the planet that we live on. This is especially important RIGHT NOW with serious economic crises ahead, where the answers are clear but the inevitable is being delayed. We need to be able to look after ourselves and share our ‘green wealth’ when what experts predict to happen, actually occurs. Here’s a simple truth if we spent half as much time growing beautiful heirloom, healthy, and non GMO food and plants, as the average person spends on their lawns, this planet would not be in danger of running out of food. Thanks for bringing these ideas to the masses.”

  • Lindysun

Having an emergency seed bank is important because it can be the foundation for a glorious garden of sustainable produce.  With the uncertainty in the world today and the government that wants to take more and more control, we all need to have something in our hands that can help us get through if needed.  It is good to know where your seeds come from and by having a seed bank and using some of the seeds, you can reap a bounty of additional seeds from the produce and still enjoy all your planting efforts. As in the motto of the girl scouts, always be prepared.

Having an emergency seed bank is important because while many of us obviously believe in self sufficiency, there may come a day when we don’t know exactly what it is that we are growing, with all the gene manipulation and modifications. I’d like to be able to tell and share with my grand and great grandchildren the same vegetables our parents and grandparents passed down to us. Names that are familiar to many of us may become a thing of the past, with all the genetic manipulation taking place. Also, an emergency seed banks could become an item of necessity in times of a widespread catastrophe, such as the recent tornado outbreaks, another massive hurricane, or even the long-term droughts many areas have encountered. A sustainable seed bank could benefit more than just you and your family, but could benefit a whole community.

Thanks for the contest, and good luck, everyone!
